ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier) is a unique number assigned to every SIM card. In simple terms, it’s the identifier that allows a SIM card to be precisely recognized in the network. Much like a device’s serial number, the ICCID is used by mobile operators for subscriber management and tracking. Each SIM card in the world has its own unique ICCID.

Structure and Meaning of ICCID

An ICCID usually consists of 19 or 20 digits. Each section of this long number carries specific information:

  • MII (Major Industry Identifier): The first two digits, defining the industry type. For telecommunications, the code is typically 89.

  • Country Code: The next 1–3 digits, indicating the country where the SIM card is registered.

  • Issuer Identifier (Operator Code): A variable-length section that identifies the mobile operator that issued the SIM card.

  • Individual Account Identification: The following digits, unique to each SIM card, used to distinguish between cards from the same operator.

  • Check Digit: The final digit, calculated to validate the entire number.

Where to Find ICCID

The ICCID is typically printed on the physical SIM card itself. In the case of an eSIM, the number is provided digitally by the mobile operator and is often required during eSIM activation.
